Since 2009 the Contemporary Art Museum of Crete has acquired a high-quality museum space of approx. 1000 sq. m. which was extended and refurbished to complement the old "L. Kanakakis"Municipal Gallery (1992) and the Rethymnon Centre for Contemporary Art (1995).
Its permanent collection of some 650 works comprise creations by the Rethymnian artist Lefteris Kanakakis which span all phases in his career as well as works by other contemporary Greek artists which cover the entire spectrum of the Greek contemporary artistic reality from 1950 to this day.
The CCA of Crete presents some of the works in its Permanent Collection on its main facilities (Mesologhiou 32), while some of the halls or other spaces are used to host temporary exhibitions of national and international content. At the same time it implements programmes and joint projects with similar organisations fromGreece and abroad.
Since 1992 the Museum has presented 140 monographic and thematic exhibition and published 60 catalogues. During the exhibitions there are guided tours available for children and adults.
Since 1996, the Educational Section of the CCA operates the Workroom of Fine Arts (Himaras 8) which are addressed to children and adults.
